There
is a nightly auction in town during the summer season, where you
may find yourself considering anything from art to furniture,
jewels to sculpture. A short drive up a steep and winding hill
brings you to Sunset Rocks, the perfect place to watch the sun
go down over the lovely town of Highlands. Remember
to bring your favored beverage and favorite companion. At the recreation
center you might find a pick-up game of basketball, swimming
lessons for the kids, activities geared for the toddlers, or
other holiday related activities, such as a parade and fireworks
for the fourth of July, a wonderful Halloween celebration complete
with hot dogs and tons of candy for the kids and other seasonal
parties and celebrations all summer long. The Hudson Library
displays local artists works and has guest lectures on various
topics, call the library to find out what's coming up.
Just
a few miles from the town of Highlands are some of the most stunning
waterfalls you have ever seen, including Dry Falls, where you have
the opportunity to walk right behind a rushing cascade of water
without getting wet. Well, maybe a little damp. There are other
falls which you may not approach, however photo ops abound. If you
have the nerve, you can drive down some of the winding and narrow
mountain roads in your car, where you will get the chance to see
nature in all its majesty. The fall season in the mountains of North
Carolina is world famous, when the mountains and valleys appear
to be lit up with fire, ablaze with colors you cannot possibly imagine
and will not want to miss.
For
Sunday mornings, there are many houses of worship from which to choose. You are always most welcome.
The
weather in Highlands in the summer is spectacular. Temperatures
are usually in the seventies during the day with next to no humidity,
and in the evening it drops about twenty degrees, into the fifties,
sometimes cooler. Please make sure to bring a sweater or a light
jacket in the summer and plan to bring heavier evening outerwear
in the fall.
